Factsheet about Southampton's physiotherapy BSc
If you are thinking about applying to us here at the University of Southampton to study our physiotherapy BSc, here is a factsheet containing some key information about the programme.
The physiotherapy BSc degree is a three-year full-time programme of higher education that, once successfully completed, will entitle you to register as a qualified physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council. In addition, your Physiotherapy BSc will also be recognised by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.
Learning and teaching methods on this physiotherapy BSc are varied and include lectures, group work and self-directed learning. You will also make use of case studies as a basis for applying theory to solve problems.
As a physiotherapy BSc student you will be assessed on your academic work and your clinical placement performances using a variety of methods, including: written exams, essays, oral presentations, practical exams, and the development of a research protocol.
Importantly, around one third of this physiotherapy BSc (1,000 hours) will comprise hands-on clinical experience. You will undertake practice placements in four specific areas, including critical and acute care, and orthopaedics and musculoskeletal practice.
Physiotherapy uses a physical approach to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social wellbeing to help service users overcome problems caused by illness, accidents and ageing.
As a physiotherapy BSc student you will come to see normal movement as central to a client's health and work to improve their movement and comfort through education, health promotion, preventive healthcare, treatment and rehabilitation.
You will also need to be a good communicator, be interested in solving problems in a logical way, be able to motivate and educate people, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
